October 31 - There is night South African horseracing later today at Newmarket and the highlight is
undoubtedly the juicy Pick Six carryover. The net pool is expected to top R1
million and we can help you with our exclusive handicapping preview of the key
horse races on the card.
There are eight races on the card, and the first leg of the Pick 6 is the third
race, a Maiden Plate over a mile. COUNT CHARBON is the ante-post favourite but
is weak in the betting even though the combination of Zaki/Strydom is not easy
to beat.
There are a lot of horses with decent form in this race including CELLAR GUARD,
CRIMSON'S BAR, and THE WINDMILL. Our Pick 6 advice is to go wide in the first
leg and don't leave out the Anthony coupling (3 & 8).
Race 4 is one of those literal two-horse races on paper at least and it should
be won by either TUCSON or OUR GIANT. The latter is beautifully bred and has
plenty of scope but might need the run as many of Charles Laird's runner look
like they need one or two starts to get back to full strength following their
sojourns in Natal.
The fifth race is where we take our stand and tell you to go with GUNPOWDER 'N
GRIT, the Spike Lerena gelding is down in class and has the talent to dispatch
his opposition at a reasonable price. We make him the best bet on the card in
terms of value.
Race 6 looks open although our preference is for the Dean Maroun trained gelding
ARBOUREZ who could have the measure of this field. Our longshot play in this
race is MALDINI with the tiny maestro Johnny Geroudis in the saddle.
The last two races set up for a quick doubles based on formlines. Take SUMMIT
SEEKER in the 7th for Anton Marcus, and end the night in style by following
Strydom's mount RIPPLING RING back to the winner's enclosure.
All in all this looks like an easy Pick 6 to win and we would advise smaller
perms than normal - just make sure you avoid a potential upset in the first leg!
