August 30 - A ruling handed down by a North Gauteng High Court regarding the legality of online gambling has caused massive confusion among South African punters.
As such, Phumelela and Gold Circle, horseracing and tote betting operators, issued a statement reassuring their customers that wagering on horseracing and sports is still legal.
These two forms of gambling are not affected by the recent ruling by the Gauteng court, according to the groups.
"Unfortunately, the court ruling has caused a great deal of confusion and many people are under the impression that online betting at horseracing and sport has been banned as well, " said Phumelela in a statement.
The General Manager of Marketing and Communications for Phumelela, Robert Garner said that this was definitely not the case. "Phumelela and Gold Circle's TAB online customers can continue betting as normal, as can Betting World's [corporate bookmaking chain] online clientele," he said.
Phumelela currently operates in seven out of South Africa's nine provinces.
Phumelela and Gold Circle are the only horseracing and tote betting operators in South Africa.
Betting World is owned by Phumelela and offers national fixed odds on horseracing and other types of sports.
The high court ruling makes it illegal to gamble using digital products in South Africa and online gambling operators and players who are found contravening the law could face a fine of R10 million or 10 years in jail, or even both.
