July 30 - The July 5 national lotto in South Africa saw the
R20 million prize divided between two lucky winners. However, since then, nobody
has stepped forward to claim the money, leading the national lottery operator,
Gidani to make a special appeal.
This week, Gidani announced that the R20 million had finally been claimed by
players from Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.
A spokesperson for Gidani, Thembi Thulwana said: "Unlike our Gauteng winner
who is not planning on quitting his job, our new millionaire from the Eastern
Cape will call it a day and rather have his lotto millions work for him."
The Eastern Cape player had already realized he was a winner soon after the
results were announced, but decided to hold off from claiming the prize for a
few days until he thought carefully about what he would do with the money.
After hearing a radio interview with a representative of Gidani regarding
unclaimed prizes, the winner decided to come forward in fear that he would miss
out on the money.
According to Gidani, there is over R26 million still waiting for the rightful
owners to come forward and claim the money. Gauteng tops the list with unclaimed
prizes - R14 million in total, while R10 million remains unclaimed from the
Eastern Cape, R1.4 million from North West, and R1.2 million from Limpopo.
Winners have a year to collect their winnings, after which time the money
returns to the National Lottery coffers.
The Eastern Cape winner said this week that he will educate his children with
his windfall, purchase his own property and invest the rest!
