January 1 - South Africans were given a reminder by the National Gambling
Board ahead of the holiday season about their playing habits.
The Board said in a statement that South Africans should remember that
gambling is game of chance and should thus treat it as such.
The statement warned that South African gamblers should be "aware and
cautious" when taking part in gambling activities.
"There is no magic or charm that can make one win," said the statement. "At
the end of the day, gambling is a game of choice. Sometimes you win and
sometimes you don't."
The National Gambling Board also announced the launch of a new campaign with
the start of the new year "to caution problem gamblers and discourage potential
irresponsible gamblers."
The new campaign, according to the Board would "caution problem gamblers and
discourage potential irresponsible gamblers."
One of the main aims of the campaign is to "caution the public regarding
spending on gambling during difficult financial time, especially during the
festive season."
The Board treats problem gamblers through a network of 65 professional
stations in nearly 50 towns and cities around South Africa.
