December 1 - South African women have finally discovered the adrenaline high, financial rewards and entertainment factors associated with the game of poker.
With the increase in popularity of the game around the world - both online and offline - and a rise in the exposure of poker through televised tournaments, South Africans, and women in particular, are joining poker tables and learning the ropes very fast.
"Three years ago, you wouldn't have seen a woman at the card tables," said John Paul Waites, who represents, Full House Events, a poker-themed event company. "Now we get roughly a 60:40 split between men and women at our poker-themed events, and women have featured at the final table of every one. They usually come in as complete novices, but they take to the game really fast. With some guidance from our mentors, they're soon able to hold their own against, and even beat guys who have often been playing since their teens."
Waites believes that women have a unique ability to use their intuition in order to learn and succeed in poker. "Women tend to have a gift of natural intuition and subtle skills that allow them to work out the playing style and body language of their opposition very quickly, said Waites.
Poker is also being used as a way to reinforce social ties within a work place and network within an industry. Poker evenings or even weekends are arranged among women and these are proving to be immensely popular in South Africa. "Poker is becoming the new golf, certainly for women," said Waites. "While the guys are off on the greens, we're hosting female execs in the game reserve for an African Bush Poker Experience."
