April 6 -
The US Masters, the first of the four grand slam events on the 2007 golf
calendar got underway yesterday at famed Augusta.
If you want to bet on the golf
and you think that Tiger Woods can be beaten why not side with one of the South
African contingent? We should feel proud that no less than six South African
players were invited to participate in this year's event.
The six are: Gary Player, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen - all winners of multiple
golf majors - and three golfers who could join that exalted company: Trevor
Immelman, Rory Sabbatini, and Tim Clark.
Of the six Clark is right up there in contention after the first round where he
was one of the few golfers to beat par on the day. Ernie Els continued his
dismal run by shooting in the high 70s and all but certainly playing himself out
of contention.
Immelman, who has enjoyed tremendous success on the US PGA Tour
is right up there as is Sabbatini.
Player shot +11 on the day but still beat home four others including former
legend of the game Seve Ballesteros. He is now the only one of the big three
(Nicklaus and Palmer) that still competes at this level, a testament to the
incredible shape Player has stayed in over the years.
Justin Rose and Brett Wetterich share the lead at -3 after the first round, with
Woods lurking only four strokes back. Most sports bettors and bookmakers seem
convinced that Tiger will win it this year but we're not convinced.
Don't be surprised to see a South African donning that fabled green jacket when it's all
over on Sunday evening.
