May 27 - The state of South Africa's football infrastructure is insufficient to carry the next generation forward to the great heights it has the potential of reaching, said Mark Fish, former international defender.
Fish was speaking at the launch of Aaron Mokoena's Foundation at the Emerald Casino Resort, where he congratulated the Bafana Bafana coach for his initiative that will hopefully allow more young South African football players to realize their dreams and become top stars in the country and around the world.
Fish said that he believed that the future of South Africa's football world was the responsibility of all stakeholders and that changes had to be made to existing structures.
"It think for too many years we lived off the glory of our 1996 Africa Cup of Nations win," said Fish, who won 62 caps for the country from 1993 up until five years ago. "We seem to take it for granted that the structures that were in place then would carry us forward, but that has not been the case."
Fish praised the general quality of players currently in South Africa. "There is amazing talent in this country," he said, "but there is a lot more to being a footballer than raw skill. The best players in the world have been coached into what they are today and if we can improve our coaching at grassroots level, that will filter up to the first division, PSL, and ultimately Bafana Bafana."
Mark Fish was also full of praise for Aaron Mokoena's drive to coach school aged children around the country in a bid to pick out future players and teach them the skills that could help them become international stars.
"I remember when Aaron came with the Bafana Bafana side to Burkino Faso as a 17 year old, just to observe what it was like to be in the national setup," recalled Fish. "I think he learned a lot on that trip and he has now risen to captain on that side."
