October 18 - A colt called
Lion Tamer lived up to his name on Tuesday night
this week when he 'tamed the pack' by winning at Newmarket in the Grade 2 Astrapak 1900
runner-up in his seasonal horseracing debut.
Trained by top-rated Charles Laird, Lion Tamer showed he had the heart of a lion
as he dominated the Superior Plate at Newmarket, even though he was carrying a low 45kg mass
apprentice allowance.
From the outset Lion Tamer seemed in another league as he escaped the pens first
and set the pace. The Western Winter bred colt led from start to finish with
Carnadore and Dollarmation also showing potential in the early stages.
Hot on their heels were Silverpoint and Gang Related and trailing the race were
Cup Of Grace and Hunting Tower, also trained by Laird. Clearly on the day the
'hunter' was being outrun by the 'lion'.
With just 400m to go Lion Tamer had pulled a clear four lengths ahead of the
pack, his low mass proving an advantage. Even at the 200m mark and still three
lengths in front, the colt looked impossible to beat and he held on to the
delight of the crowd, his owners and trainer.
Said Laird after the race, 'We are extremely pleased with Lion Tamer's
performance and expect great things in the future. We are aiming
to enter Lion Tamer and Hunting Tower in the November Handicap and then the
Summer Cup.'
