July 12 - Bahamas-based Kerzner International, which is one of the casino resort
developers vying for the Sentosa Integrated Resort (IR) bid in Singapore, has
hired celebrated architect Frank Gehry to be part of its team.
Kerzner International is hoping that Frank Gehry will bring to Singapore the style
of architecture he made famous with his design of the Guggenheim Museum in
Bilbao, Spain.
The Kerzner group and its 40% equity partner, CapitaLand, are up against two
other consortiums vying for the casino bid, Genting International and Universal
Studios, and Eighth Wonder, a US-based casino resort developer.
Industry analysts expect the winner casino resort developer to fork out between
$2 and $2.3 billion Sentosa spot, whose land is worth $605 million alone.
With the announcement of Frank Gehry's arrival, a little more light has been
shed on Kerzner's up till now low-profile bid.
However, the 'flamboyant and colourful' South African billionaire is said to
keep a 'close eye' on all his projects, which span South Africa, the Maldives,
Dubai, The Bahamas, Mexico and Mauritius.
Said CapitaLand CEO Liew Mun Leong, 'Sol Kerzner's Sun City resort has almost
single-handedly contributed to the rise in tourism in South Africa, as has his
Atlantis, Paradise Island resort in the Bahamas.
'Hopefully if we get this bid,
the Kerzner-CapitaLand team can do the same for Singapore,' he said
