July 10 - After weeks after anticipation and excitement, Italy are the new World
Cup champs after beating France in last night's 2006 World Cup final in Berlin,
Germany by 5 goals to 3 in a 'nail-biting' penalty shootout.
The game was hard fought by the two teams and at 1 all, resulted in a penalty
shoot out by the end of extra time.
Italy managed to hold it together to score 5
penalty shootout goals to France's 3 and walked away the latest in a long line
of World Cup soccer champions.
However, the game was tarnished by a nasty incident that will go down in the
history of the sport as one of the most 'ugly' displays ever witnessed.
French
captain and scorer of France's earlier goal, Zinedine Zidane, head butted
Italy's Marco Materazzi, and scorer of Italy's earlier goal, in the chest completely unprovoked.
His violent action resulted in Zidane being sent off and a tarnished end to
the career of one of France's biggest soccer superstars, as The World Cup Final was Zidane's
last official game of soccer before retiring.
So, the final score was in effect 6 - 4 to Italy, whose supporters are expected
to continue their celebrations throughout Italy over the next few days, even
amidst claims that corruption is rife within Italian soccer.
