April 27 - The Indian Premier League has rejected the International Cricket Council's offer to use its anti corruption security unit, and has said that it prefers using its own specially trained staff for this purpose.
The IPL, which is currently in full swing across locations in South Africa, is not obliged to use the unit as it is not considered an international event. If it was, it would have been a mandatory requirement before permission would be granted to hold the event in the country.
"IPL opted not to use the ICC'S Anti Corruption and Security Unit, it's a domestic tournament and there's no compulsion to use ACSU," said a spokesperson for the Cricket Council. "Every event has its own protocol and the IPL organizers preferred to use their own staff."
After a major international match fixing scandal rocked the cricket industry in the millennium year, the ICC created its unique anti corruption unit that has become a permanent fixture on the international cricket circuit since then.
South African Hanse Cronje, who later died in a plane crash, was one of a number of high profile cricketers involved in the scandal.
The IPL also chose not to link with ICC during the inaugural event last year in India.
At the time, the Chief of Federation of International Cricketers Association, Tim May, said that the IPL may be susceptible to match fixing as a result.
The cricket tournament was moved to South Africa this year due to the fact that general elections were being held in India on the dates that the event was due to take place. As a result, security clearance could not be received.
The IPL has had the who's who of Indian and international cricket land in South Africa, where it will run until May 24th.
