April 5 - Lalit Modi, the Indian entrepreneur responsible for bringing the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket event to South Africa later this month, was surprised with the news that he has appeared on an assassination hit list put out by the Indian crime boss, Chhota Shakeel.
It is alleged that Modi was due to be killed after he failed to pay money that was demanded from him by Shakeel.
Speaking in Cape Town, where he has come to prepare the ground for the opening of one of the cricket world's most extravagant and star studded events on April 18, Shakeel reacted to the news that he was on the hit list.
"It's part of life, I guess," he said. "The police are still investigating what it's all about. I was surprised myself. I was given a phone call by the police commissioner in India and informed there was a hit out and I need to be careful, and they were going to provide police protection for me and my family."
Nevertheless, Modi has vowed that it is full steam ahead for the Indian Premier League cricket event that promises to be a real treat for cricket fans.
Within 2 hours of the tickets for certain games going on sale on Friday, they were all sold out.
Some of the top celebrities from India will be heading for South Africa this month to attend the cricket, including models, Bollywood stars and Sharukh Kahn who owns one of the participating teams.
Modi also explained why South Africa was chosen to host the IPL event after it was impossible to hold it in India due to a clash of dates with national elections.
"If we could host the tournament in another country, why not?" he asked.
In terms of time zones that would allow the screening of games at normal times in India, England and South Africa were the only possible choices. However, South Africa eventually won the rights to host the IPL after it was believed that the weather in England could potentially wash out 80% of the games.
Modi praised the infrastructure and sporting facilities in South Africa, as well as its excellent tourist locations and attractions.
