May 18 - The Indian Premier League cricket contest that is reaching its end in South Africa, has brought with it more than non stop cricket entertainment across the country since it began last month.
Besides the excitement surrounding such a grand international event that has brought the very best of Indian cricket to the country, the IPL has also vowed to give back to the community in each city that matches are played out it.
As a policy, the IPL promised to donate much needed funds to four schools in every city in order to advance the education of young people in these locations.
One such school to benefit directly from the IPL's generosity is the Bartimea Combined School in Thaba Nchu, which tries to educate and meet the needs of nearly 500 visually and hearing impaired children in the Bloemfontein region.
"It's very sad," said the principal of the school, Joyce Thophela. "Some of our learners feel alienated. The study material doesn't meet their needs, even in their own homes they aren't able to engage with their parents or other members of the community. Sometimes they don't want to go home after school because they feel so isolated."
The IPL has decided to donate R100,000 to the school to assist them in buying a Braille machine that could go a long way in producing study material for the children in need.
"We serve a poor, remote area," said Thophela. "Unemployment here is high, communities simply don't have the money to help the school. This donation is just what we needed and will go a long way in helping our students with their studies and interaction with the community."
On Tuesday May 19th, the Delhi Daredevils meet the Bangalore Royal Challengers in Johannesburg, while the rest of the week sees cricket matches played out between Rajasthan Royal and Kolkata Knight Riders (Durban), the Mumbai Indians versus the Delhi Daredevils, and others.
