July 9 - This weekend saw the running of South Africa's biggest and most
prestigious horse race, the Durban July, held annually at Greyville racecourse,
with many of the more well to do crowd dressed to impress and champagne
flowing faster than many of the horses could run.
Interestingly, in the build up to this year's Durban July, the field was
described as one of the most competitive in recent years, with some horses being
touted as 'too close to call', adding to the excitement and expectation of the
historical 2.2 km horse race.
Luckily the spectators were not disappointed as the race turned out to be a neck
and neck display of fine equine action and steroid induced 4-legged ecstasy.
After a thundering start, the field settled down quickly with the
back markers surely wishing they were in the front, the frontrunners surely glad
they were not at the back and the middle runners not quite sure what to do.
It was, however, the last 500 meters of the race when the real nail-biting began,
after Hunting Tower's jockey, Anton Marcus, seemingly switched up the nitrous to blast over the line first, winning the R2.5 million 2007 Durban July.
The 4-year old
Hunting Tower, who is owned by Bridget Oppenheimer and trained by the highly-respected Charles
Laird, received more than his fair share of pats, complements and juicy carrots
after his accomplishment.
The Durban July top 4 results were:
1. Hunting Tower
2. Buy and Sell
3. Jagged Ice
4. Pocket Power
