May 31 - We've heard the jokes and we've seen the odds. The chances of Bafana Bafana breaking through the first round of the World Cup are slim, apparently.

Or are they?
Could South Africa's national team surprise us all by performing exceptionally well as the host team?
It will not be the first time that this has happened. Buoyed by national pride, knowing that all eyes are on them, and benefiting from the work ethic of a coach who takes no nonsense, Bafana-Bafana may actually upset the long odds and perform better than we expect.
On the second Friday of June, all eyes will be watching Group A as Bafana Bafana takes on its rival. It is hoped that the team will reach the knockout stage - and this in itself will be seen as a victory.
Bookies are making no apologies for the fact that they don't give Bafana much chance of making it through to the next stage.
They are currently ranked 6-1 to win Group A and at 16-10 for being the side to be the least likely to go through to the next round.
But sports analysts believe that Bafana deserves the benefit of the doubt and, if the gods are smiling on them this month, they have the potential at least to knock out two of the other sides in its group.
For one, the South African supporters could certainly play a huge part in the team's success.
Secondly, it should remembered that Bafana is the only team in the entire group who has a coach with a World Cup title under his belt.
For that reason alone, it might be wise to consider that Bafana has a good chance of upsetting the odds.
