October 24 - Earlier this month the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB)
announced its intention is to roll out limited pay out slot machines across Gauteng in association with various small to medium businesses, to help improve economic development and growth in the province.
It is expected that the GGB will endorse the licensing of limited pay out slot
machines in recreational, gaming and entertainment facilities across Gauteng, making slot gambling more accessible then ever before to gambling fans over the age of 18 (the legal gambling age in South Africa).
Said Gauteng Gambling Board CEO, Benito Lekalakala, 'The licensing of limited
pay out slots games offers an ideal opportunity for us to facilitate the
participation of small to medium-sized business to increase economic
participation in Gauteng's gambling industry.'
Continued Lekalakala, 'Now limited pay out slots will be distributed more evenly
and widely throughout Gauteng province and, as they will be facilitated via a
network of small businesses, will require less capital than that involved in the construction and running of traditional land casinos.'
The slot machine initiative is expected to create additional revenues for the
Gauteng Provincial Government to be used to improve its service delivery, as
well as to contribute to the eradication of illegal and underage gambling in the
province.
Gauteng companies interested in operating slot machines can apply to the Gauteng Gambling Board, where they will be required to meet strict criteria and
requirements in order to be granted a license from the board.
Any businesses granted gambling licenses that that break the law in terms of encouraging or facilitating underage gambling will face stiff penalties. Approved gambling licenses are expected to be announced by the GGB in 2008.
