October 3 - South African gamblers are being tapped by a new website to think about sharing some of their riches and winnings with some of the country's underprivileged, and it is hoped in this way that more hungry children will be able to benefit from the philanthropic work of an ambitious church minister as a result.
The Do Unto Others website (http://www.do-unto-others.com) calls on gamblers to use some of the disposable income that is not required to support their own families and donate it instead to a special fund set up by Brian Hutton, a minister for the Hillside Methodist Community Church to feed hungry schoolchildren in the area.
The money is used to make sandwiches for children, which are distributed to local schools. While the project feeds around 75 children at present, Minister Hutton has big plans to extend the assistance to include more children and other basic essentials such as warm clothing and heating for the cold winter months.
The Do Unto Others website, unlike other charity appeal sites, targets gamblers specifically, with the knowledge that many have at their disposal sums of money that can benefit the poor in South Africa.
"We are truly fortunate that we can indeed afford to gamble," reads the site's homepage. "We have some disposable income that is NOT required to keep our families and our lives afloat. Do Unto Others is simply a means for us to share some of that disposable income with those that are less fortunate. We are not giving to those who have had an innings in life, we are giving to those who have not even had a chance to live life yet! The children is what this fund is all about. We will give the funds received to children who have nobody to hold, nobody to love, and get nothing from the world to brighten their lives."
