August 20 - While South African rugby fans were upset that the Springboks
lost to the New Zealand All Blacks last weekend in Newlands, they were more
upset over the fact that the loss was such a bad one - 19 - 0. Fans remarked
that the match lacked any game plan and that the players appeared 'lackluster'.
Industry experts are now wondering whether the Springbok coach, Peter
de Villiers may be reaching the end of his colorful career with the team.
Certainly, according to fans, some of the players lack belief in their coach and
this was clearly seen during Saturday's match.
If this is the case, and de Villiers is on his way out, Springboks fans are
warned that they are in for a long and difficult period as the team gets over
the loss of one coach and the getting used to of another.
It has often been questioned just how seriously the players take their coach
on the rugby field, and one simply needs to see how de Villiers handles a press
conference to get some kind of indication of whether he is really the right man
for the job.
De Villiers took over from Jake White as Springbok Coach and tried to put his
own personal stamp on the job as soon as he could. True, he did not purge
everything good that White had built and left for his successor, but at one
point he began to change methods that he was not a great fan of, such as the
style of play and selection policy.
Industry analysts seem to think that de Villiers is unable to motivate his
team to adopt a winning spirit - something that is obviously so essential in
this game, especially against some of the greatest teams out there like the All
Blacks. Without this spirit, and combined with a lack of belief in their coach,
it is feared that the Springboks will continue to notch up losses like
Saturday's.
Naturally, it is only fair to see how well the Springboks fare in their game
against Australia before writing off the coach, however - if things continue
going the way they are - analysts are positive that de Villiers may be on his
way out.
