March 24 - One of the most influential personalities in the gambling
industry, John M. Galloway, died from cancer at the age of 69 in his home in the
United States.
Galloway, known fondly as 'Jack' by colleagues and family, was a pioneer in
the land-based gaming industry, launching a number of innovative programs and
schemes to bring gamblers to the casino doors.
Jack Galloway's biggest impact was felt in the industry when he led
the way to turn business from small, local locations to larger, resort-like
casinos, which incorporated hotels, gambling venues and convention centers.
From the mid 1980's, Jack Galloway transformed the Tropicana Resort and
Casino in Atlantic City from a mediocre location to a 1,100 hotel room empire
that boasted no less than 2400 slot machines - essentially doubling the resort's
size by 1990.
By 1992, Jack Galloway was ready for his next challenge, which took him from
the buzz of Atlantic City to the bourgeoning gambling industry in South Africa.
Galloway took up office as Head of Gaming for the prestigious Sun International
group and made a strong impact in the local industry.
A friend and colleague, Dennis Gomes, who was President of the Taj Mahal
casino said of Galloway: "He was a very intelligent guy. He thought everything
out. He wouldn't just make snap decisions. He put a lot of thought into it and I
admired him for that."
In 1995, set to head back to North American shores, Jack Galloway took over
as CEO for Capri Casinos, turning four small local operations into a chain of
sixteen resorts that spanned three different countries around the world.
Frank Fahrenkopf, CEO of the American Gaming Corporation said: "Jack was a
true pioneer in our industry at a time when gaming was beginning to become an
integral part of America's broader entertainment landscape. He was one of the
visionary entrepreneurs who led the transformation of our industry into the
multi-faceted recreation experience it is today, and he will be missed."
