May 16 - Even though the Durban July handicap is still a few months away, a
top-rated horseracing website has published a log of how the Selection Committee
views the field of the Durban July Handicap if it was run today.
Due to the dynamic nature of horseracing, the log will be updated and amended as
per the results of every horse race between now and July that are considered
'qualifying' races for South Africa's premier horseracing event.
The log comprises the 'Top 20' horses as well as the 'Next 10', which are horses
on the periphery with the opportunity to secure a place in the Top 20. Between
now and the Durban July Handicap, any of the Next 10 horses could be 'promoted'
to the Top 20.
The same would apply to horses currently not listed on either log. If a
particular horse shows good promise and improvement in its performance before
the July, it could make it into the Next 10 or even the Top 20 log.
