July 9 - Casinos and shopping centers in the Durban areas have increased
their security methods because of the rising crime elements in the city. One of
the newest strategies to be introduced are "dragon teeth" spikes.
These spikes are positioned in strategic areas around the Durban casinos
and are activated to prevent criminals getting away in their cars. The
spikes have the potential to rip the tires of any car that rides over them,
leaving robbers with no way of escape.
According to Robbie Naidoo, the executive marketing manager of Suncoast
Casino, the establishment is relatively crime free because criminals know
that they have very little chance of exiting the premises with their car intact.
"We have two entrances and exits, and we have spikes at both," said Naidoo.
"There have been no serious or significant incidents of hijackings or armed
robbery at our casino. We firmly believe that these spikes have been a deterrent
for criminals and this is the main reason why other shopping centers and casino
complexes are adopting the same approach. We are glad that Sunset Casino
is regarded as a generally crime-free place and people can be assured of their
safety when they enter the premises."
Spikes are generally activated from the control centers at Durban casinos and
are only released with authorization.
The South African police has welcomed the initiatives adopted by the casinos
and shopping malls. "We always welcome people who come up with strategies to
curb crime," said SAP spokesman Supt Vincent Mdunge. "It is a proactive approach
that will reduce incidents of armed robbery and hijacking. These shopping
centers and casinos are better equipped to deal with crime."
Nevertheless, the increased threat in crime has made many players look for
alternative gambling options, with many finding them in the superb South African
online casinos on the internet.
