July
17 - I was lucky enough to be in Durban for the weekend where one of the
supposed highlights was to watch the rugby test between the Springboks and the
Wallabies live at a trendy big screen TV sports venue, ice-cold beer in one hand
and bar munchies in the other.
You may have noticed my use of the words 'supposed' in the sentence above
because after more than 90 minutes of shockingly bad and even embarrassing play
from our lads in green and gold, it soon became apparent that the outing would
become the 'low point' of my trip.
If you don't already know the final score, I'll save it till the end of this
article. Think of it as a 'shot of adrenalin' to your heart because if its
severity doesn't jolt you awake or knock you flat on your back, you are probably
already in a coma. You have been duly warned!
From the outset the Springboks had their hands full...er, although not
literally, as many of our guys demonstrated just how not to catch a ball! Fumble
after fumble seemed to set the tone for the rest of the match as its seemed our
guys struggled just to keep awake in the game.
And don't even get me started on the poor discipline of the Springbok team. The
Bokke conceded twice as many penalties as Australia and had to do without lock
Victor Matfield, who spent time reflecting alone in the sin bin for his classy
but professional foul in the first half.
At this point perhaps I should mention though that Australia were on fire. The
Wallabies worked extremely well as a team and gave the rugby world a display of
what truly world class test rugby is and should be about. And it didn't hurt any
that they were playing us on the day!
I could use up another 10 paragraphs at least explaining all the plays from the
match in great detail - the great ones from Australia, and the really, really
crappy ones from us - but instead I think I'll slam South African coach, Jake
White. Jake, I hear a coaching post has opened up in Beirut...
And now for the score. The Springboks were whipped 49 to 0. Breathe. Now I know
what you're thinking, that I'm messing with you but I swear I'm not. South
Africa was trounced, devastated, beaten, whipped good and proper by 49 points to
zero, niks, fogall, zip, nil, nada!
Australia 49: Tries: Matt Giteau 2, Jeremy Paul, Greg Holmes, Chris Latham, Mark
Chisholm. Con: Stirling Mortlock 5. Pen: Mortlock 2. Drop Goal: Stephen Larkham.
