February 17 - Jean de Villiers, who joined the Irish Munster team last
summer is heading home to South Africa, it was revealed today.
The 28 year old centre hopes that a return to his homeland after the current
season will allow him a good chance of representing South Africa in the World
Cup next year.
De Villiers confirmed that he was happy in Ireland and his move was for
personal career reasons only.
"My decision is solely determined by a desire to put myself in contention for
the Springboks RWC squad," said de Villiers.
"I feel this is perhaps my last opportunity to represent my country at the
Rugby World Cup," he added.
De Villiers said that after he consulted with the South African Rugby Union,
it was made clear to him that in order to qualify for the South African side
next year, he would need to be playing the game within the country in the season
leading up to the competition.
The player praised the Munster team and said that he was thoroughly enjoying
his time in Ireland. "I think it would be fair to say that had the World Cup not
been a factor, then I would be remaining for at least the next two seasons," he
said.
De Villiers said that after the World Cup, he would not rule out the option
of returning to Ireland.
In the meantime, he still has plenty of work wearing the red shirt and will
be representing Munsters in Heineken Cup and Magners League competitions.
