January 9 - As the countdown to the much awaited SA Open tennis tournament begins, players and spectators alike are expressing their excitement and hoping for perfect playing conditions at the beginning of next month.
One of the top ranked players to attend the SA Open is to be Marcos Baghdatis, the Cypriot professional who stated that he is using the event as an "emergency measure" to kick start his floundering tennis career.
Baghdatis, who suffered multiple injuries during the course of 2008, said he was taking part in as many tournaments as possible to get himself back into peak fitness for the coming circuit year.
Interviewed while playing at the Kooyong Invitational in Melbourne, Baghdatis said: "I would not normally play a tournament in the week after a Grand Slam, but after the back injury and the ankle I had a bad year last year and I need to start fast this year. To do that, I need to play a lot of matches."
Baghdatis said that he was feeling confident that he was over the worst and that, despite a few back pains, he was "fit and healthy". His main aim is to now get back on the courts and build up his confidence once more.
The altitude in Johannesburg may not be the ideal playing conditions for a recovering player to restart his career, but Baghdatis seemed unperplexed when asked how he thinks he will manage. "I have haven't a clue," he said. "I have never played at that altitude before. I will be able to answer that question once I get there and start hitting few balls."
Baghdatis, who has never visited South Africa before, was visibly excited. "Looking at the draw for the SA Open, I think it will be a great event, and I have heard that the casino hotel is unbelievable."
