November 10 - Former South African cricketing great and well-known TV
commentator, Pat Symcox, has resigned from pay channel, SuperSport, after
allegedly becoming 'fed up' with restrictions imposed on his commentary as well as
his 'below par' salary.
Symcox said he was sick and tired of being instructed by SuperSport executives on
what he could and could not say on air.
Symcox is a well-known critic of the
'quota system' that was introduced into South African cricket to benefit
previously disadvantaged players.
Regarded as one of South Africa's best spin bowlers of his time, the former cricketer is
expected to leave SuperSport after next week's Indian Tour of South Africa.
However, it is believed that Symcox will not comment for SuperSport but instead
for international sports network, ESPN during the tour, which will not be
broadcast in South Africa.
Regarding his salary with SuperSport, Symcox told a reporter that the amount of
time he spent commentating did not match his salary and that he was
looking for greener pastures.
Symcox played first class cricket for South Africa for 21 years, having played in a staggering 20
Tests and 80 one-day internationals. He retired from cricket in
1999.
