December 11 - After threatening to bring
Sun City
to its knees in a major strike that would have frozen the entertainment resort
for the festive season, the trade union representative movement, Cosatu
announced that a memorandum of understanding had been signed with management.
Cosatu claimed that a Falcon Security officer, contracted to provide security
services to Sun City, distributed a racially offensive CD at a staff function.
In addition, the powerful group said that some of the female employees at Sun
City had been accused of theft and strip searched by security.
As a result, Cosatu threatened a massive strike that would have blocked the
roads to and from the resort, and impacted the holiday season.
One thousand protestors gathered outside Sun City, demanding that several
senior managers of the resort be dismissed, and that Sun City end its contracts
with two of the security companies with which it has contracts.
After a meeting, it was announced that Cosatu and Sun City management had
reached an agreement on the issue, thus avoiding a full blown strike.
"The memorandum states that two officials would be suspended and one
dismissed, and that they would also face criminal charges," said the North West
secretary for Cosatu, Solly Phetoe.
Phetoe also said that a full investigation would be carried on the security
company and that "Cosatu would embark on legal action against them."
In the meantime, another dispute over wages has led to Saccawu declaring a
strike in several days times that will impact not only Sun City but other
casinos operated by Sun International as well.
