July 15 - In what the South African sports press are referring to as the quickest debut try in the history of the Currie Cup, former All Black Chris Jack managed to score within a mere 20 seconds of the match's starting whistle.
Jack, who began his stint with Western Province to earn valuable Currie Cup experience, helped lead the team to victory over the Sharks at Newlands with a 29-15 score.
Jack is hoping that his time spent with Western Province (as part of his contract terms signed with his Saracens team in the UK), will eventually lead him back to his ultimate dream - to play once more in a World Cup event wearing the All Blacks shirt.
The thirty year old ended his second World Cup competition when the All Blacks were taken out in the quarterfinals by France at Cardiff.
Much credit was given to the tight five that Western Province was able to keep together during the set pieces of the game, essentially keeping the Sharks at bay in their own half of the field for significant periods of time.
"For many years now, it has been a criticism that the WP tight five was the weak link in the team but today they really fronted up to the Sharks," said Western Province skipper, Luke Watson to the press after the match.
Chris Jack and Sireli Naqelevuki scored tries during the match, while Willem de Waal scored two conversions. De Waal was also credited with five conversions.
