January 12 - One of Swaziland's most wanted men, Shishiswe "Shisa" Kunene was arrested in South Africa over the weekend, thanks to the quick thinking actions of security staff in a Midrand casino.
Kunene has been on the run with an accomplice, Senzo Motsa, since October last year after he took part in one of the most publicized armed robberies that took place at Piggs Peak police station. The group of robbers attacked police officers who were on duty in the station at the time and made off with E6.2 million (half a million Euros). E5.8 million of the money was meant to pay grants to elderly residents of the area.
After the robbery, the International Police (Interpol) and the Southern African Regional Police Chief Cooperation Organization (SARPCCO) received photo kits of all the suspects from the local Swazi police who were keen on tracing their footsteps and putting them behind bars.
Kunene, who apparently had no idea of the lengths that the Swazi police had gone to in order to catch him and his accomplices, was living the high life in South Africa, staying at top hotels and spending his 'hard-earned' cash. On the night of his arrest, Kunene was sitting at one of the tables at the Midrand casino when his image was picked up by security cameras.
Within a few minutes, the police were notified and it wasn't very long before a stunned Kunene was arrested. When taken up to his hotel room, a large amount of foreign currency was found in his luggage. Kunene had also changed his identity and was going under the alias of Nkabindze.
Ironically, Kunene has spent some time working as casino croupier at the Royal Swazi Sun before he turned to crime.
Plans are already being made to extradite the criminal back to Swaziland to face trial.
