September 25 - Derek Auret, the Chief Operations Executive of the Casino Association of South Africa (CASA), spoke about the future of the casino industry in the country and noted how limiting the prospects for expansion for in the local market.
Auret said that the government had granted nearly all forty of the sanctioned licenses and anyone considering creating major casino and tourism resorts in South Africa would have a problem finding the right location.
As a result, the CASA head said that existing casinos needed to be innovative and creative in their thinking, perhaps diversifying their products in order to increase their revenue. "Operators will be working to make their resorts more interesting to attract more visitors," said Auret. "Therefore, there is likely to be a move towards greater differentiation by providing games and facilities not available at other locations. Companies will have to be creative to give themselves the edge."
It was also the opinion of CASA that South African casinos would need to start consider expanding into the rest of Africa or even off shore in order to improve their revenue. Auret said that South African casino owners, as a rule, should have no problem operating in global jurisdictions because they had a high work ethic and were well respected in the industry.
The need to expand into the rest of Africa was echoed by the Managing Director of Tsogo Sun Gaming, Rob Collins who said: "If you want to grow by acquisition or by building new operations, expansion is only practical cross border," he said.
Collins said that South Africa casino operators already had an advantage in other African markets because many had existing relationships with other countries, and local banks had already expanded there - offering financial backing.
"All the South African groups have pursued or are pursuing opportunities as they arise in Africa," said Collins.
