October 8 - Despite tough economic conditions and less consumer spending power, the chairman of the Casino Association of South Africa (CASA), Jabu Mabuza, has released some interesting facts regarding the state of the casino industry in the country. He said that the estimated turnover for the gambling industry last year was R14 billion.
According to Mabuza, the casino industry is doing well, and it is expected to positively influence the next step taken by the government regarding gambling - that of online wagering.
Thanks to the government's investment in South Africa's overall economy, that has seen the creation of 100,000 new jobs and the investment of R15 billion over a decade, the country's local casino industry has blossomed.
Expansion has occurred in every market associated with the gambling industry, and CASA announced that three new casinos are due to be created in the country very soon.
Tourism has increased significantly at a number of casino resorts around South Africa, including Montecasino, Carnival City, Golden Valley and Suncoast.
CASA said that South African casinos are playing a huge part in social transformation and have stepped up to their corporate social responsibilities. The casino sector has invested approximately R70 million domestically in the past couple of years, while the R4 billion gleaned by the government from these casinos in corporate taxes help develop communities and infrastructures in a large way.
In addition, South African casinos are sticking faithfully to the government's Affirmative Action policy and are empowering Black citizens in this way.
The Casino Association of South Africa is an interest group that represents 33 out of the 34 current casino resorts in the country. The association deals with issues such as licensing, regulations and problem gambling and is assisting the government as it takes its next step into the world of online gambling.
