April 23 - That is the question on the mind of every cricket lover between
Bloemfontein and Bangladesh as the Proteas prepare to face Australia, and
reigning world champs, in the 2007 ICC cricket World Cup semi-final on Wednesday this
week.
The answer, however, is as varied as cricket pitches around the world. For
instance, there are many people who believe that South Africa will 'choke' when
they face down the fierce and motivated Aussies, while others feel that the
Proteas will suck it up and play their best.
South African coach Mickey Arthur was quoted as saying that the South African
team is 'very different apart from three or four guys' and that history (when
Australia beat South Africa to win the 1999 Cricket World Cup) will not be a
factor in the minds of the South Africans.
In fact, the four 'survivors' of the 1999 campaign, Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis,
Herschelle Gibbs and Sean Pollock, were all essentially quoted as saying that
'the past is the past' and 'what happened in the last World Cup is no longer
relevant'.
South African fans have a right to be nervous, however, given that earlier this
month in the tournament the Proteas were 'thumped' by Australia by 83 runs in
their Group A match in St Kitts, one of nine matches where the Aussies remain
undefeated.
Let's hold thumbs for the lads and hope that they put the Australians firmly
back in their place by bringing the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup trophy back to our
fair shores!
