October 10 - That is the million Franc question running through the minds of
South Africa's millions of rugby supporters as the Springboks prepare to face
down Argentina's Pumas on Sunday (October 14th 2007) in Saint-Denis, France in their 2007 Rugby
World Cup semi-final match.
After escaping unscathed but victorious in their hard-fought match against Fiji
last weekend in Marseille, the South African national rugby squad simply have to keep
their cool and squash the Pumas in order to progress to the finals where they'll
face either England or host country France for the cup.
In a Rugby World Cup filled with upsets - England's initially dismal
performance and New Zealand and Australia's unexpected exits to name a few - the
Springboks remain the sole representatives of the Tri-Nations as well as the
only remaining southern hemisphere team, with everything to play for.
While anything could happen, there is a definitely a buzz in the air that the
Bokke are perhaps as close to winning the 2007 IRB Rugby World Cup as they were
in 1995 when they convincingly beat the All Blacks at Ellis Park to become the
2005 Rugby World Cup champions.
If everything goes according to plan and the Springboks outrun and out-score the
Pumas, the world rugby community will have the pleasure of enjoying a northern
vs. southern hemisphere showdown, and hopefully some tough, top-class rugby
union action.
After their victory over Fiji, Springbok coach Jake White complemented captain,
John Smit for the way he 'rallied the team together' in the final quarter to
stave off a strong and motivated last-ditch effort by Fiji, who exhibited
perhaps one of their gutsiest test match performances to date.
