May 19 - It was make or break for the Chiefs and Brumbies in Hamilton on Friday, but this wasn't to be the year for the Brumbies, and the Chiefs walked away with a 10-7 victory.
The win for the Chiefs secures a home semi-final against the Hurricanes on Friday 22 May.
The Waratahs, too, were playing for an all important position in the top four for the semi-final play offs, but even though they beat the Lions 38-33 at the Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg on Friday, it wasn't enough to keep them in the running, and the Waratahs, sitting 5th on the log, will join the other teams on the sidelines, to see the rest of the tournament out.
The Crusaders weren't about to relinquish their chances at a semi-final play-off, and they beat the Blues 15-13 in Auckland on Saturday.
But it wasn't all smooth sailing for the reigning champions, and a last minute drop goal by Leon MacDonald, helped them scrape through, to meet the Bulls on Saturday 23 May for their semi-final clash.
The Hurricanes also had reason to celebrate on Saturday in Brisbane, as they too secured their position in the semi-finals against the Chiefs.
Their 37-28 win against the Reds, put them 3rd on the log, while it left the Reds in the bottom three of the table for a sixth year in a row.
The Highlanders, hoping to end their Super 14 season with a win, had to accept defeat against Western Force in Perth on Saturday.
They return home with a 33-28 final score, leaving them 11th on the log, and Force sitting at 8th position.
The full-time hooter sounded at Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein on Saturday, giving the Stormers a 28-22 win over the Cheetahs.
It was a disappointing match for the Stormers, but they exit the season 10th on the standings, and the Cheetahs still hold last place.
The pressure for the Sharks at The Absa Stadium in Durban was overwhelming. They needed a win with four tries and a bonus point, in order to see the semi-finals.
But it just wasn't the Sharks day, and the Bulls took the last spot in the semi-finals with a 27-26 win, knocking the Sharks out of the competition. The end result means that the Bulls top the log, and host the Crusaders in Pretoria on Saturday 23 May.
