May 7 - As the Super 14 rugby competition draws to an end in South Africa, Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has announced that the injuries which some of the team members sustained during the event will not affect preparations for the upcoming British and Irish Lions series.
"The Super 14 is a tough competition and we expected that injuries might impact on our selection for the Lions series," said de Villiers this week. "For that reason we never cast anything in stone, even though there are players incumbent in certain positions who would in all likelihood be included in a starting XV".
A number of key players were injured during the Super 14, including Fourie du Preez who was hurt in the calf, Adrian Jacobs in the shoulder and Andries Bekker, who was inured in the rib.
"The fact that some of these players are currently beset by injury is a concern, but I do not want to draw any conclusions until I have consulted with the respective medical teams and have a full understanding of the extent of each injury and the recovery prognosis," said de Villiers.
In a statement released by SA Rugby, de Villiers said that it had been decided beforehand to take stock of the injuries of all players and base the team selection for the upcoming British and Irish Lions series on these facts.
Adrian Jacobs is hoping that he will be able to play in the series, despite his injury, although he has been told that he will need surgery at a later date.
