November 8 - South African horseracing punters enjoyed the dubious pleasure of betting on the
Breeders Cup on Saturday night.
The self-proclaimed (a USA tradition) world
championship of horseracing was beamed to us from Churchill Downs, Kentucky and
it was all downhill from there.
Favourites were beaten with more regularity than a red-headed stepchild,
culminating in Bernadini's shock defeat in the Breeders Cup Classic by an
amazing South American challenger, Invasor.
The money came for Bernadini and
George Washington, who couldn't even manage a place, although European
challengers enjoyed some success in the earlier races.
Frankie Dettori booted home two winners on the day, which might have been good
news for some SA punters who follow this jockey with almost religious
dedication. It is truly a hilarious sight to pop down to the local TAB outlet
and watch previously disadvantages gamblers scream home Dettori's mounts in
faraway destinations like York or Redcar.
They shout out 'Go Luigi! Go Luigi!' at the top of their voices - calling
Frankie 'Luigi' is presumably a nod to his Italian heritage.
But back to the Breeders Cup, which is always notoriously tricky to handicap.
A cynic might note that the reason could have something to do with the fact that
it is the one race meeting in the world where every horse is trying, and there
is some merit in that argument.
The biggest factor behind all the upsets is that
the races bring together horses from disparate race centers all with top-class
form, but little of it is connected.
It is very hard to know whether the top New York horse is better than his
Californian counterpart, let alone how the top English and French horses will
compare with the USA champs.
The biggest upsets on the day were in the Sprint where a 15-1 shot, Thor's Echo
won and the 8-5 favourite Henny Hughes trotted home stone last, and in the Mile
where a former claimer named Miesque's Approval won at 24-1.
