November 5 - Every year thousands of racegoers from across the United States watch the Breeders' Cup World Championships and wait in anticipation for the biggest race of the meeting, the Breeders' Cup Classic (Gr 1) which this year has attracted an exciting and dynamic field of 3-year-olds and older.
And what makes this year's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic so exciting is the fact that unbeaten mare Zenyatta will also be competing in the 1 1/4 mile race, the only female entrant. What's more she has a very real shot of winning the prestigious BC race. Check out our Breeders Cup Classic Betting Picks:
Trained by J A Shirreffs, Zenyatta (5/2) will start as the race favorite based in her 13 for 13 record and all the hype surrounding her going up against many of the country's best males. She is a 5-year-old mare who likes to be in front and will be ridden by champion jockey M E Smith.
Rip Van Winkle (7/2) is a 3-year-old colt trained by top Irish trainer, A P O'Brien, who knows his stuff and horses. This runner could well be the horse to beat. Will be ridden by J P Murtagh.
If 3-year-old colt Summer Bird (9/2) can adjust to Santa Anita's synthetic Pro-Ride surface, has a good shot of placing if not winning. Trained by T A Ice and will be ridden by superb jockey K J Desormeaux.
Since causing a massive upset in May this year when he won the Kentucky Derby as a long shot, 3-year-old gelding Mine That Bird (12/1) has failed to reproduce that winning form. Trained by B L Woolley, Jr, he'll at least be reunited with his winning rider and champion jockey C H Borel.
Colonel John (12/1), a 4-year-old colt trained by E G Harty, has many fans but has lacked the kind of consistency he may need to win a race like this. Though will have G K Gomez aboard on Saturday.
There is no doubt that 3-year-old colt Quality Road (12/1) has just as much chance of winning the Breeders' Cup Classic as any of the other top runners. The only question is whether he'll be able to handle the distance. He is trained by T A Pletcher and will have J R Velazquez aboard.
Watch our for Richard's Kid (12/1), a talented 4-year-old colt who has a proven penchant for synthetic surfaces and the distance. He trained by the highly respected B Baffert and will have top-rated jockey A O Solis aboard.
Arguably the finest turf horse in America right now, 4-year-old colt Gio Ponti (12/1) may struggle on Santa Anita's synthetic surface. Trained by C Clement , he'll be ridden by R A Dominguez.
Despite his age, 7-year-old horse Einstein (12/1) has a couple of things going for him. One, he likes Santa Anita and the distance and two, he'll have champion jockey J R Leparoux aboard. He is trained by H Pitts.
Normally 3-year-old colt Regal Ransom (20/1) would be a runner to consider if it wasn't for the way he gave-up on this surface last year. He is trained by S bin Suroor and will be ridden by R Migliore.
British 4-year-old colt, Twice Over (20/1) could be another 'upset' horse who has had a good career and is reportedly in top form. Trained by H Cecil, he will have T P Queally aboard.
Girolamo (20/1) is a 3-year-old colt who has taken longer than usual to develop, but is reaching his peak and proving to be a big talent. He is trained by S bin Suroor and will be ridden by A Garcia.
Finally, there is Awesome Gem (30/1), a 6-year-old-gelding who may once have been an 'awesome gem', but is certainly no longer. His trainer is C Dollase and he'll be ridden by D R Flores.
As for our personal Breeders Cup Classic Betting Picks, these are our three chosen horses: Rip Van Winkle, Richard's Kid and Einstein.
