September 10 - This weekend the Springboks showed the rugby union world that
they are in pretty good form as they beat Samoa in a bone-crunching display to win their first 2007
Rugby
World Cup match by 59 points to 7.
In control of the game from the outset, the Springboks were quick to capitalise
on the opportunities given them and proved to be a cohesive and tight-knit team,
with wing, Brian Habana and full-back, Percy Montgomery, proving to be the
team's stars.
While Samoa scored the first try, Habana subsequently scored four, while Monty put 29 points on the board for the
Springboks, evoking more than a little sympathy for the Samoans who, apart from
undergoing a constant bone-crushing Bok barrage, faced more than a few unlucky
decisions.
However, there were nothing but smiles in the Springbok camp and even the
usually lambasted coach Jake White appeared chipper as he told the press
that 'These games don't count for anything. What counts is that we have beaten
England in three of the last four games, and have the most capped captain as
well as the most capped lock.'
Unfortunately, however, the Springboks did experience a set back when talented centre
Jean de Villiers left the field with a bicep injury that looks as though it will
put paid to his 2007 Rugby World Cup dreams.
Samoa too had their fair share of injuries, the most noticeable when centre,
Brian Lima, left the field after only four minutes of play with a suspected concussion. Lima is
the only player in the tournament to be playing his fifth Rugby World Cup.
The Springboks will next face England on Friday in Saint-Denis, in what is being
touted as one of the 'biggest games of the World Cup.'
