November 11 - The Springbok coach, Peter de Villier's has broken with
protocol and invited current Leinster prop, CJ van der Linde to join the
Springboks in the match against France this weekend.
Johan du Plessis, who has an injured hand, will need to sit out of the
European Tour.
It is generally not customary for the Boks to call up players who move to the
Northern Hemisphere to play for other teams, however du Plessis obviously has
his reasons.
Van der Linde will thus be joining the Boks in France today.
"It's fantastic that we're able to call on a player with CJ's experience to
join the squad," said de Villiers.
"With such a tight schedule it is also helpful to be able to bring someone
who has been part of the group before, knows the systems and will settle in
quickly," he said. "CJ is also a specialist tight-head who will provide the type
of cover we will need. It is unfortunate that we have lost three players so
early in the tour but that is part of the game and we have to be able to manage
such setbacks."
De Villiers was referring to the loss of Chiliboy Ralapelle and Guthro
Steenkamp who were injured in the Boks' recent encounter with the Tigers.
Leinster coach, Michael Cheika, will also benefit from the extra playing time
that his prop will enjoy in the European Tour. He hopes that the experience that
van der Linde gains in November will get him into shape for the team's action in
the Heineken Cup games.
