October 2 - After a long and hard rugby battle, the Blue Bulls ensured a 42-31 victory
over the reigning Currie Cup champs the Free State Cheetahs, on Saturday at
Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
While the Bulls certainly seemed the stronger team, their defense
left something to be desired, allowing the swift Cheetahs to score enough tries
to earn themselves a bonus point.
At half time, the score line was 26-12 in favour of the Blue Bulls although it should
have been 26 nil.
The Cheetahs took full advantage of a lack lustre Bulls defense, a prime example
being when Phillip Burger easily caught a Johan Roets up and under and hurtled
his heavy frame
65 meters to the try line, bringing the Cheetahs within two points of the lead.
In the 42nd minute, the Bulls managed to retain their lead through a superb
interception try from Akona Ndungane and an equally exciting try in the 48th
minute from Pierre Spies.
While on the day the Cheetahs may not have been able to avoid the full brunt
of the Bulls, their well deserved bonus point has guaranteed the Free Stater's a
home semi-final.
As for the Bulls, their triumph has meant that they need not to travel to
Newlands, but expect can play hosts to their old foes, Western Province next
Saturday at Loftus.
