October 9 - To
enormous cheers from their home crowd, the Blue Bulls beat Western
Province 45 to 30 in Pretoria on Saturday, earning themselves a guaranteed spot
in the Currie Cup final in Bloemfontein this weekend against the Cheetahs.
Through hard work and sheer determination, the bulls achieved a convincing 20 to
9 lead by half time, scoring five tries to Western Province's three.
At one point both teams were even with two penalties each, when 'Die Bulle'
seemed to kick it into gear, starting with Derrick Kuun's drive over the
line supported by the team's powerful forwards.
Not long afterwards, Bulls stalwart JP Nel laid the groundwork for Kuun's
magnificent second try of the day. At this point Province tried to shift gear
themselves, but had no answer to an extremely effective and strong Bulls
defense.
However, the Capetonians did manage to land a blow with one of two Gerrie Britz
tries. The Bulls answered with a
try by Marius Delport, set up by the team's back line.
For the next few minutes, the crowd at Loftus and millions of South African TV
viewers were treated to some sterling rugby as the two teams played hard and traded tries.
However, by the final whistle, the Blue Bulls had done enough to ensure their
place in the 2006 Currie Cup final.
As the defending Currie Cup champions, the Cheetahs will have a tough job fighting off the 'bloodthirsty' Bulls on Saturday. Watch this space!
