In the five ODI series currently underway between the two countries, South
Africa has a 3-0 lead, which is why the Sri Lankans are desperate to show what
they're really worth.
Despite their advantage in this cricket series, the South African
team is missing a couple of key players in this fourth match. Hashim Amla, the
best batsman in the world, had to suddenly pull out of the series due to family
responsibilities.
In the third match of the series in Bloemfontein, skipper AB de
Villiers demoted himself to sixth spot to make way for du Plessis, a brilliant
decision considering how well du Plessis played.
Speaking about de Villiers' decision, du Plessis said: "I am very
grateful to AB and Kirsten to have promoted me. The series win a very big
achievement for us. I was suffering from cramps and it became a bit serious. The
track was playing nice and with AB here, we were very confident. We really want
to make it 5-0."
Sri Lanka Set to Overhaul National Cricket Squad
Amidst the drama of the five day international cricket series, it
was reported in the media that Sri Lanka is to undertake a major overhaul of the
players and coaching staff of its national cricket squad before the team goes on
tour in Australia later in January.
The Daily Mirror reported that the Sri Lankan government
ordered an investigation after the team failed to win any of its matches against
South Africa in the one-day series.
The report said that that current captain Tillakaratne Dilshan will
be replaced by former captain Mahela Jayewardena. The Australian coach, Geoff
Marsh, will reportedly be given his marching papers.
Cricket officials have responded that they are not aware of the
investigation. But whether true or not, these type of reports only put more
pressure on the Sri Lankan team to do well in today's match and win at least one
out of the five in order to save face.
