Novak Djokovic, the world number one, utterly destroyed his first round
opponent, the Italian Paolo Lorenzi, with a straight sets win.
The number one seed now faces Santiago Giraldo in the 2nd round.
Djokovic is the defending champion at the Australian Open after defeating the
UK number one Andy Murray in the final last year.
Djokovic, originally from Serbia, became a media icon in 2011 after going
unbeaten for a record 43 matches. This winning streak was brought to an end by
Roger Federer at the semi-final of the French Open when he beat the Serb in 4
sets.
Despite not taking the French Open last year, Djokovic is still ranked number
1 in the world and is expected to make short work of Geraldo in their second
round match up.
Giraldo and Djokovic Met in The 2007 French Open
Giraldo and Djokovic have met on the courts in the 2007 French
Open where Djokovic won in straight sets. Since then Giraldo has gone on to
represent Columbia in the Davis Cup and has taken on a wide range of big names
in the game.
Giraldo has consistently qualified to major events though he has
an unimpressive record when it comes to playing against the highly ranked
players in the game. He is unlikely to be able to get through the tough game
that awaits him at the hands of the world number 1 in the next round.
After winning his first match in just over an hour and a half,
Djokovic got into the swing of things and told reporters that "When you're 3-0,
4-0 up why not try some other things, some things that are not usual
characteristics of your game? I am definitely working on my net game and am
trying to approach the short balls as much as I can and take my chances."
The excellent performance has laid to rest fears that the Swiss player has yet
to fully recover from a back injury he sustained earlier this year.
Djokovic Betting Favourite at the Bookies
The bookies are favouring Djokovic to take the title and it is
easy to see why. The Serb has managed to dominate the sport since coming from
almost nowhere on his run of wins last year and has beaten everyone there is to
beat.
The fact that the bookies are so sure that Djokovic is going to
take the title means that there is a great chance to make some money by betting
against him.
With odds this good there is no reason not to take a chance and
try to cash in on a Djokovic who freely admits that he is not used to the hot
and humid Australian conditions.
