October 11 - As part of the Nelson Mandela Challenge,
Bafana Bafana and Egypt will play each other on November 15 this
year in London, as opposed to South Africa, to raise funds for the Nelson
Mandela Children's Fund.
The decision to host a soccer match between two African teams on a
different continent entirely was made by the South African Football Association
(SAFA), based on the poor crowd attendance last month at the FNB stadium where
Bafana Bafana
drew with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Said SAFA chief executive, Raymond Hack, 'The object of Nelson Mandela Challenge match is to
raise funds for the children's fund and we felt that we could generate more
interest and money by hosting the match overseas.'
Perhaps what Hack means is that SAFA was not prepared to spend in excess of
R4-million on the event and risk losing money on the venture. Not an unrealistic
outlook, given Bafana Bafana's lack luster performance so far this year.
However, the South African national soccer squad did retain a little dignity when they beat Zambia
by one goal to zero in
Sunday's African Cup of Nations qualifier played in Lusaka.
Personally, this writer feels the most amazing thing about our national soccer
side is how much money its new coach is being paid each money, despite failing
to bring his team to victory in the 2006 World Cup.
Ho hum.
