April 30 - After trouncing the Proteas last week, the Australians faced down Sri
Lanka in the final of the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup this weekend in Barbados
and, despite poor weather and even poorer umpiring, the world's number one
cricket side secured a convincing victory.
The Aussies scored 281 from 38 overs in a rain-soaked match to walk away with
their fourth consecutive World Cup victory and the added kudos of being unbeaten
in 29 World Cup matches since losing in 1999 to Pakistan.
Confusion 'rained' after the Australian team and their numerous fans at
Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, started celebrating when Sri Lanka needed 63 runs
from three to win. Match umpires Aleem Dar and Steve Bucknor then told the teams
they needed to complete the remaining overs or return the following day.
Both team captains, Australia's Ricky Ponting and Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene,
agreed to use slow bowlers to see out the match due to poor light, with Sri
Lanka ending on 215 for 8, giving Australia a 53-run victory.
At a news conference later, however, match referee Jeff Crowe confirmed that
match was already over due to the fact that Sri Lanka had completed the minimum
20 of their revised allotment of 36.
Well done Australia!
