February 1 - Even though Arsenal's reserves beat Spurs last night in the
semi-final of the Carling Cup the English bookmakers make them long shots to
repeat the feat in the final against another hated London rival, Chelsea.
Arsenal are easy to back underdogs to lift the meaningless trophy at 11/8. The
Blues by contrast are odds-on favourites at 4/6 with Coral.
Arsenal fielded their young side, primarily made up of second- stringers to take
on Tottenham and the move proved successful as they rallied from being 0-2 down
in the first leg to win on aggregate by a final score of 5-3.
Arsenal look set to field a similar line up of youth and relative inexperience
in the final, which will be played on February 25.
Chelsea, on the other hand are taking the tournament seriously by fielding
strong sides for these ties, although it could be argued that their reserve team
still looks pretty glittering on paper, even though chemistry on the field is
sometimes an issue.
Chelsea lost top defender Ashley Cole in their game last night when he was
injured during a 3-0 rout of Blackburn Rovers.
Chelsea remain a 2/1 chance to retain their league championship title after
Manchester United also cruised to a midweek victory thrashing Watford 4-0 to
maintain a daunting six-point lead at the top of the table. United are 2/5 to
win the title, and it still seems to be a two- horse race for this valuable
trophy.
