August 24 - The Tri Nations rugby tournament reached a new level of
excitement on Saturday after the All Blacks beat Australia in a thrilling 19-18
victory.
New Zealand coach Graham Henry said that his team's ability to remain calm
and composed throughout the match was the key to their victory.
Adding to All Blacks pressure was the fact that the team trailed slightly
behind Australia for almost the entire match.
However, one beautiful match winning penalty kick by flyhalf Dan Carter only
two minutes before the final whistle, led the All Blacks to their victory dance.
Speaking at a press conference after the match, Graham Henry said: "I was
just very proud of the character shown by the players tonight. It was just
mental toughness because we didn't get the roll of the dice."
Henry praised the opposition and said that they definitely gave his team a
run for their money on Saturday. "The Australians are a very good side and they
really stretched us tonight and there was just a feeling of pride after the game
for what the guys achieved," he said. "Our guys showed a huge amount of
intestinal fortitude. It just shows that guys have the guts to hang in and keep
going."
New Zealand now remains in second place in this year's Tri Nations
tournament, behind South Africa - which remains undefeated.
"That was a hell of a test match," said the All Blacks Captain, Richie McCaw.
"We really had to dig deep for that. There were times at the end when we let
them back in but that's what test rugby is all about."
