June 11 - When Marie van Wyk from Kimberley became an instant millionaire last year after hitting the jackpot, she never dreamed that that she would need to fight to get the money due to her from her fantastic win.
The 66 year old grandmother won an incredible R8.5 million at African Palace Casino, a Playtech powered site that has an excellent reputation among South African and global players alike.
The money was won after she hit the progressive jackpot on the Beach Life slot machine.
After her win, African Palace Casino used the win to create much deserved publicity hype about the site and then reached an agreement with van Wyk that she would paid out in six monthly installments.
While the first two installments were dutifully paid out, van Wyk waited for the April payment in vain. When May's check also didn't turn up, and the winner realized that she has only seen R2.8 million out of her total winnings, she turned to the local media with her tale, in the hope that her publicity would prompt African Palace Casino and Playtech to pay up faster.
Instead, however, she was told by a lawyer representing the casino that a "workable solution can be found without the need to air grievances in public."
African Palace Casino is keeping mum about the issue for the moment, besides stating that the site is working on resolving the issue as soon as possible.
This is not the first time that Marie van Wyk has won big. She was paid out R64,000 by African Palace Casino for another win and since she received her payment promptly that time around, she felt that she had no need to worry when she agreed on monthly installments this time around.
At the time of her win, van Wyk was asked what she was going to do with her money and she replied: "Spoil my kids and family for all the support they have shown me over the years."
Let's hope that the casino can find a solution soon so that van Wyke can fulfill her dreams.
