November 5 - When Sol Kerzner launched Sun City in the then independent black homeland of Bophutatswana so many years ago, it was obvious that the man was destined for great things. Even back then, Kerzner was all for taking chances to remain one step ahead of his competition in the hotel and gambling world.
"Mr. Vegas of the Veld", as he was known back then, had no qualms about marketing a hotel resort that embraced an 'anything goes' attitude, bordering on hedonist, and he did things that were considered completely 'faux pas' in those times, including the screening of pornographic films in Sun City cinemas.
Today, the 73 year old Kerzner has moved beyond Sun City and is preparing to launch the biggest and most expensive project of his life.
The London based tycoon will open the doors to the Atlantis this month - a 1,600 room hotel and aquatic theme park in Dubai, which will become the biggest hotel in the Middle East.
Sol Kerzner has invested 400-million GBP into this venture and he - along with the rest of the global industry - is eager to finally welcome its first guests.
It comes as no surprise that Sol Kerzner is planning one of the biggest opening parties to date for the Atlantis. There are over 2000 guests on the star-studded list, including top Hollywood moguls such as Denzel Washington and Robert de Niro.
It has already been confirmed that Kylie Minogue will perform at the grand opening, while visitors (and non-visitors) will be treated to a fireworks show that is reported to be six times bigger than the one seen at the Beijing Olympics opening!
