April 18 - Some of the biggest names in the South African gambling world
converged at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg this week for the 5th Biennial
Gambling Conference. The event began on April 16th and ends on Friday.
Among the attendees at the conference are major international gambling
companies such as Betfair - a company that is not allowed to operate under
current gambling regulation in South Africa but nevertheless remains interested
in the goings on of the industry. Other delegates include representatives from
regulatory bodies such as the International Association of Gambling Regulators
(IAGR) and the Gambling Regulators Africa Forum (GRAF).
The first day of the conference saw interesting sessions on internet
gambling, one of the hottest topics in the gambling world today. Other sessions
include discussions on the future of the industry, both in South Africa and
around the world.
The conference will also cover topics that affect all sectors of the gambling
world - whether online or offline - namely, problem gambling and underage
gambling.
A topic of particular interest to the horseracing community was the one held
on racing and betting and how these sectors contribute to the South African
economy at large. Guest speakers at this session included Larry Wainstein,
chairman of the Horse Racing Association, and the CEO of Phumelela Gaming and
Leisure, David Attenborough.
The conference comes at the right stage in South Africa's gambling industry,
as Parliament considers legalizing online wagering in the country. The bill
proposal has been 'parked' for the moment as all sides thrash out the issue of
gambling advertising in the market.
