January 23 - As South Africa and the rest of the world continue to prepare for the upcoming World Cup in 2010, the organizing body FIFA is warning the public against the danger of falling for world cup lottery scams.
A number of emails are currently doing the rounds promising unsuspected citizens that they have won money in a lottery connected to the World Cup. However, FIFA warns citizens that these emails are scams and should not be bought into.
This week, FIFA took the steps of issuing a statement on the lottery scams in a bid to prevent citizens from falling victims to criminals who ask them to provide their personal and banking details in order to claim their 'prizes'.
"FIFA continues to be alerted to emails fraudulently claiming to be associated/linked to FIFA, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and/or Local Organizing Committee informing recipients that they have been selected as prize winners in a lottery draw and have won substantial sums of money," read the statement issued by the International Federation of Association Football.
"Many of these emails appear to be official and most of them ask recipients to provide their personal details, including bank account information, in order to claim the cash prize," continued the statement. "FIFA strongly advises the public to treat any emails concerning lottery draws or cash prizes with suspicion and extreme caution."
Some of the letters and emails sent out appear to be more 'professional' than others. One fraudster used the South African government's website as a reference in his letter, while others have been using official looking World Cup 2010 logos to make their correspondence look more authentic.
FIFA urged the public to report all cases such as these to the Consumer Fraud Organization.
